lesson plan for I Saw A Moose Today

The grown-ups are cleaning house and young Whims Wiggin is sent out in the yard to play. Imagine how delighted Whims is when animal playmates arrive, one after another. First a moose, then a loon, followed by a woodpecker, lynx, bear, caterpillar, bat, beaver and otters. Whims has an adventurous morning, and the reader just knows more animals will appear after lunch. Everything a child loves in a book is here — spunky animals, a child with which to identify, the rhythm and rhyme of poems, and pictures in which there is something new to discover with each reading. There are fun big words, like “cacophonous” and “hibernate,” with a glossary in the back for advanced readers or parents and teachers. An information page on each animal gives facts even adults may not know, and raises questions that will create a “let’s find out” attitude in readers of all ages.

James A. Cox from The Midwest Book Review, March 2007, had this to say about I Saw A Moose Today:

"Engagingly written by Anne Stewart and featuring Brent Spink’s full color, as well as black-and-white illustrations, “I Saw A Moose Today” is the whimsical, charming, and wonderfully entertaining picture book story of a child who imagines what it would be like to spend the day with a number of different animals in the American northwoods. Entertaining and simply delightful storytelling, “I Saw A Moose Today” is further enhanced by offering young readers factual information abut each animal in a separate section at the end of this book, concluding with thematically appropriate web sites, a bibliography, a glossary, and biographical notes on the author and illustrator."

Jay Anderson from the Cook County News Herald in December 2006, writes:

“I Saw A Moose Today” is another fine children’s book from Ely publisher, Raven Productions, which specializes in books about the natural world. Stewart has assembled a fantasy about an imaginative child looking at clouds and dreaming a lot of ‘what if’s’ to pass the time with her dog. But in her imagination, she learns a great deal about all the animals she meets, where and how they live — and all in simple rhyme.

"As with many recent children’s books, Stewart has included more technical information on her animals at the end of the story. This technique allows the child to glean some facts from the fantasy, and for parents to read them the more detailed information to help fill out their understanding of the subject. She also challenges her young readers to seek out information elsewhere, like the library or web sites.

"In the end, our adventurer tries to resist going inside for lunch; there are still marvels to conjure up. The sweetest illustration in the book leaves us with Whims Wiggin sailing on her tire swing — but with a firm grasp on the rope — looking off at all her cloud animals disappear into the sky. I think Whims Wiggin might be a fund kid to know. "
